What can we do about stress?

What is stress?

Stress is an ever present concern in life these days, with the stresses of pressure at work or school and home life on top of worrying about the next pandemic around the corner whether your stressed about catching the virus or your financial situation due to its effects, it is difficult to escape stress.

It is easy to say to someone who is stressed to stop worrying, find time for themselves to unwind or start meditation, however it is another thing entirely to find the time to actually do these things, many who are experiencing stress already feel that they don't have enough time in the day, so adding extra activities or even removing particularly stressful ones may not be an option.

There is however always more than one way to tackle any problem, If one cannot stop the cause of daily stress it may still be possible to stop the effects of stress, thereby removing the feeling of stress and making life a little bit easier.

Effects of Stress?

Stress is felt on the body due to the release of the stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol is released by our adrenal glands and plays an important role in the fight or flight response, when in the optimum quantities cortisol assists in maintaining our blood pressure , immune system, metabolism, growth memory and reproductive system, however in larger quantities the same hormone can cause damage to all of these systems, in this situation excess stress can trigger the release of additional cortisol which can lead to decreased immune system and libido, increased blood pressure and blood sugar and weight gain. Too much cortisol caused by stress can ultimately lead to obesity and type 2 diabetes.

What can we do about stress?

So what can you do about this, the easiest thing is of course take a pill, anti stress and anti anxiety medication can be prescribed to you, which can then proceed to destroy your hormone balance entirely, leading to temporary relief followed by chronic worsening of psychological and physiological conditions.

There is also however a natural remedy that is just as easy to take, Ashwagandha is a herb which has been used for thousands of years in Indian medicine, known as Ayurveda, modern research has proved that Ashwagandha can significantly lower cortisol levels in the body, and as a result neutralise the effects of stress.

Medical research has also revealed that Ashwagandha provides a host of other benefits too, it contains a compound called withaferin which has proven to cause the death of cancer cells in animal studies .

Ashwagandha can also improve fertility in men and women and has been shown to boost testosterone levels in men increasing muscle mass. Its traditional usage of improving memory is also being shown to be be true as early trials and looking promising for ashwagandha to boost memory and restore memory in those with memory impairments.
